New Exhaust and Intake questions

I am pretty serious about getting a new exhaust for my 2008 X5 4.8. It really sounds decent enough stock, but I love the Meisterschaft sound, so that is probably the route I am heading down.
I have done some forum searches about this and one of my concerns is that when you have a more free flowing exhaust, you may need more air on the intake side. I have looked and have read that most "poo poo" the idea of a a larger or more free flowing intake beacuse of the usual suspects like more particulates etc. I agree 100% and would prefer to just have the new exhaust and leave it at that. I would also like to think that the fuel injection and electronic management would recognize some of teh differences as well, but what do I know?
What has been the experience here with 4.8 users on exhaust and air flow. Is it remotely necessary? Has anybody done just the exhaust or both ends? I am pretty interested. I appreciate any replies. Thanks in advance.
