Attached is a "xposed xxx" photo from our 2010 X5D. The board consists of a single 18F2431 processor, analog input, PWM - LPF output, and trim pot for user adjustment. Not an overly complicated product but it doesn't need to be. If it were possible to implement the same logic with discrete components we happily would.

I think you are confusing real piggyback chip tuners with eBay "resistor" scams.
