I do not believe that any tuning box including your own Does not smoke. I would believe it does smoke but the cat collects it in the system, Think about what is happening, you are fooling the ECU into thinking the fuel pressure is low and so the ECU pumps more diesel in. That is where you are forcing power from, you are adding extra fuel so yes it will smoke.
There is NO WAY you can fit a tuning box to the fuel pressure sensor and think the Air-Fuel ratios are going to be spot on. It is impossible.

Again, you mention the ECU flashes, there is a huge difference between an OFF THE SHELF tune which is basically a one for all tune, a generic tune for the want of another word and comparing to a custom tune. A custom tune modifys the map of the car where as a generic tune simply is an off the shelf file flashed over the original tune.
Now I am not slating or slamming generic off the shelf tunes here but more bhp can be got from a custom tune. I am sure you will agree with that.

Are the flash tunes you use generic or do you custom tune them yourself?
It is the basic Dimsport setup. Perhaps you are using the same one? Basically for $10k USD anyone can be in the BMW flashing business. When I've used it I've always done tuning, logged, changed tuning, etc. It's a slow proposition. In the case of the diesel while we can do things we can't do with the JBD all in all it is hard to justify the extra cost. In the case of the gasoline models it is far inferior to what we can do with the piggybacks.
