No, you don't have to code it, you just plug in the blue/maroon connectors and you are good to go. You would have to code it if, for example, you buy an used MK3 that is coded B&W and you need it switched to color mode. Also, there are a couple of functionality features that can be turned on/off, but they don't relate to "working or not on your car".
