Don't know about California but over here this kind of irritating crap becomes more prominent in recessionary times. A door mirror can easily be wrenched off a car and the glass sold on eBay or something. The estimate to replace the two mirrors comes to €2,500 (or well over US$3,200) so given the fact they cost so much there is a lucrative market out there for anything cheaper. In step the thieves and oblige .... whatever can easily be removed is taken and sold for good money. I've also heard of things like parking sensors and even headlights being stolen.
