When VW diesels (Jettas and Golfs) first came out, they regularly got filled with gasoline (one every month or so where I worked). People just weren't used to diesel pumps, and there were no special nozzles then. Each time, we put it up on the hoist, drained out the gasoline, refilled it with diesel, and sent it on its way. I don't remember seeing engine damage in those cases, even when they drove off the station lot and got a block or two down the road.

My cousin blew the head off my dads VW diesel rabbit when he filled it with gas.
(Acutally just blew out the head gasket)
Although he did have substance abuse issues, so maybe he drove it for more that a few blocks!
