In the picture below, the DB25 connector on the right is the connector for hooking up a BMW telephone system. It was designed for the CPT8000 phone system (which has been manufacture discontinued), but can be used to connect up the newer BMW Bluetooth module with the retrofit kit available from

On the picture below, I couldn't tell you what the connector on the left is for. That same one is in mine and is not connected to anything. Ignore it. The connector on the right is for installing the Voice Recognition Module. See

Note that if you decide to install the Bluetooth kit then you won't need to purchase the VR module, since it has built-in on the Bluetooth module. So be sure to keep that end plug with the looping wires if you take it off to install a VR module, as you'll need to put it back on when you install the BT module.
And finally, the 12 pin connector shown below is also there and unterminated on my X5. Ignore it.
