The AV-OUT connector in the rear seating area goes to the same connections on the TV tuner that Bryan showed you.

The system works as follows:

AV-OUT delivers only the TV picture from the TV tuner (or anything connected to AV-IN on the TV tuner). It does NOT show the nav screen or radio control menus (unless you have the special 760iL TV tuner, but you won't in the X5) or the reverse cam picture.

The reason is: the AV OUT was designed for the entertainment system for the rear seat passengers, and they can control the AV device connected to AV-IN (in those old days, a video recorder) which now could be an iPod or MP4 movie player.

The original BMW system used headphones for the rear seat, which were also driver from the AV connections.
The Audio on AV-OUT is a constant level line-out audio, so the screen needs a volume control.

The AV-OUT remains on the Television channel regardless of what the front screen is displaying, so you can have front passengers listening to radio or CD and watching nav, while rear passengers watch the TV and listen on their headphones.

It works really well.
