Ok, so spend some time reading the post and not to be a dic*, but, its a waste of bandwidth and storage so I'll just give you my answer since no one really spit out a number. Althought the piss match between who spells properly and if they have their grammar in check was pretty funny.
Anyways, honestly, you want a fair price for your X? Look up the value of the X. Now I am sure you took this think to an indy, dealer, whoever; after you dumped money in your X by trying to diag it yourself. Now if you think a new motor is in order, then price accordingly. Say the X is worth $30K, now deduct the $10 to $12K it will cost to have open heart surgery done on her. So you are looking at $20-$18K for your ride. Now you can price it how ever you want, but if you are talking about a new motor then that's how you would price it.
You were talking about placing members in your shoes, now do the opposite. Members who buy want a deal and sellers always want top dollar. Nothing wrong with that. That's why it is called negotiation. No one is going to know what low balling is and what your magical number is if you don't shoot out at least some type of number. To each his own. When the dealer forgot to put oil in my CTS4 3.6DI 3 months ago and blew the motor, they offered $19K. The Caddy was a 08 with 30K on the clock and loaded with a sticker of $55. I took it. My thought was when they put a new motor in, how is it going to run? I've got a 100K warranty, but I don't want to be in the waiting room every week clearing CEL's, Stabillitrak, or issues with the AWD. So the $19K was worth it to me to just get another CTS cheap. Some call it a lowball offer and some think it's fair.
In conclusion, if I were to shoot an offer, I'd give you $19K. Now I don't know what offers you got, but I doubt anywhere in the low teens. IMHO, $19K is fair, $21K is pushing it, and anything over $25K, I'm sure you can find a different low/mid mileage 4.8is that is covered and ready to drive out the door.
Just my $.02.
