I'm only repeating what the salesperson told me. He said they were going to try to do this to see if they could get me the X5M a week earlier than what they would be able to do otherwise. He did say it's rare and that the other dealer has nothing to gain other than they would be "owed" a favor for a swap the other way around. Again it may all be fluff but that's what he told me.
BTW - Paying $1K over invoice on a fully loaded 2012 X5M so nowhere near MSRP plus Money Factor of .00146 (3.5%) with no money down other than the multiple security deposits to lower the money factor. Also got dealer to throw in the Stone Guard (3M) Film as part of the deal!

What is common is what I described (and the rest of what he explained) in that the configuration shows a different car for a while. They swap your order for another car they had previously ordered for a 'stock' car. But not with other dealers... unless you are paying MSRP, which might be a different story.
