I had a quick look on the net and found this: YouTube - ‪BMW DIY #10 E46 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement for 3 Series (1999-2006)‬‏. Yes its a 3 series but for the novice its near enough the same job to use as a guide.

Very straightforward. I've pulled the engine apart further than that so the cover gasket remove/refit looks pretty easy. I think the only real thing to be concerned with is the proper sealing of the gasket when tightening down the cover(s), otherwiese it'll be a waste of time doing the job! I think I saw an article/post somewhere where someone had put up the TIS showing the sequence in which to tighten down the bolts of the cover aswell as the points where to use the RTA sealant.

I think the job should take no longer than a couple of hours.. Maybe someone else could chime in with any further info/experience...
