This just happened to my wife's 2004 X5 3.0 last night. She almost drove into a ditch off a curve in the road @ 5mph (steering stopped working). The vehicle was running prior for approximately 30 minutes. I had her turn it completely off (she wasn't sure if it was still running or not) and start it back up.

I can't find any information on this issue from her description, except for your post.

Has the issue come back at all? And, did you receive any technical information on this matter?
