There is a trade off hardness vs wear. Most tires sold in the US are rock hard and very dangerous in anything but dry conditions. I rent frequently and the tires on those cars are terrible, they scare me a lot in the wet and winter conditions. Some people demand and are proud that their tires will hold up for 50,000 miles.....madness!

For me 13,000 miles would be acceptable on a performance oriented vehicle. 20k is very good, anything beyond that you are probably driving on hockey pucks.

The only time I surprised myself was when I got through a set of Pirellis on my Carrera in 3000 miles in fairly normal city commuting but they were great tires!
