Sticky situation, but here goes. Under the assumption that you the seller
did not form an agreement with the buyer stating upon receipt and installation of the functioning MKIII unit the buyer has the option to return the unit to the seller for a refund if it is discovered that the MKIII unit is not the solution to the problem the buyer was experiencing. You have no obligation to issue a refund or accept the returned item.
It would be nice but not at all necessary.
But I have a question; Did you advise the buyer that the MKIII unit you sold would eliminate the problem the buyer was experiencing? If so, ethically I think you should refund the buyer's money since you aided in the misdiagnosis of the issue.
I may be wrong, but that is just my take on it.
