I'd be careful about fiddling around with the airbag. I don't know what the laws are like where you are but in several countries it is illegal to 'tamper' with car airbags. Could you maybe find a decent independent workshop willing to fit the part for you? That's what I did a few years ago when I had a similar part on our X3 go funky. I had several other things done at the same time so they didn't even charge me for it (I already had the part).
