I think the ride and handling characteristics are more important than "how it looks". Snazzy looking, expensive wheels look bad when the car has slid into a kerb or a tree or guardrail. The Northeast gets its share of cold weather (not to mention snow) and poor road surfaces so one should think carefully about ride comfort and whether one will buy a set of snow wheels/tires before jumping to conclusions based on "looks".
