Vanaos is BMW's variable valve timing system, varies the cam timing. Its on the inlet cams on the 4.6. Lots of threads on these failing, but they just seem to rattle, try looking on you tube to get some idea of the noise. If your mechanic is a BMW guy then he will know all about these.
