'05 X5 4.4i Radio/Nav/LKM problems
Been a member awhile but this is my first post ever on a forum or any similar.
My wife's 2005 X5 is doing some strange things and I'm thinking a background might help someone point me in the right direction.
Early August the left tail/brake light bulb was shorting out due to a mfg defect in the the socket. Amazingly nice of them (at 99,800 mi), the dealer and rep got the replacement assembly free if I did the labor...duh! Job done, light works fine, BMW assist begins calling, I ignore, they keep it up so I answer and ask them to do whatever it takes to stop. It stops.
Then while driving, the speaker system began producing a very loud static sound and did not quit until the iginition turned off. The radio unit and NAV screen then became inop. She drove like this for a week or two as I was too busy/lazy to dive in.
Shortly afterwards, the light problems began....no turn signal indicators (though signals work), green light at light switch flashing, passenger seat belt light on. And still no radio or NAV screen or controls on same.
A few days later, Friday morning, failed to start and on fourth attempt alarm sounded. After some research this site and elsewhere, allowed the emergency timeout to cancel the immobilizer/driveaway protection and it started. This was followed by numerous repeats of the process as the vehicle failed to start over the weekend. Found batt voltage low and charged for 12 hrs. Have started and driven numerous time in last 36 hours without the start issue. Battery holds 12.2 and 14.4 running.
Back to square 1. I can disconnect the battery and reconnect and the lights work ok for a bit and then back to no indicators and flashing green light at switch. I suspect the LKM or light control module and am ready to purchase one if others agree.
That leaves the radio/nav problem. Scanning the sites, I am ready to try removing the radio fuses and clean the radio control module contacts. I am not sure where the module is and how to recognize it. Is there a photo or can someone point me there....also the "red" fuse. What should I do to diagnose the screen and controls problem or will this come back if/when the radio does?
Any help will be appreciated as is the time you took to read this! I surely sometimes miss the days of my 320 (160Kmi) and 325e (230Kmi) when I could just attack most any problem.
Thanks Much
