I have exactly the same story as you from Australia.
Looked under the 2004 X3 (E83)'s 5 speed auto trans and it has a green sticker saying to use BMW part number 83220024359, which is Texaco ETL 8072B.
Went to the BMW dealer to get some of this stuff and they said it's been superseeded by BMW part number 83220397114, which is basically Dexron VI. Price is AUD$80 for a 4 litre bottle. OK, give me 2 bottles please, I say.
They bring out the bottles and it's not even BMW labelled.

But it did have BMW's part number stuck to the side of the bottle.
The fluid is made by a company called Petro-Canada.
Going to put this stuff into the gearbox and hope it doesn't have any issues with the old fluid.
The condition of the old fluid in the gearbox was shocking. It was like used engine oil, albeit very thin. I'm glad I'm changing it out.
