I have exactly the same mess going on right now. To remove the fan you can use a 300mm crescent spanner and a very big flat bladed screw driver. Wedge the driver in from the left under one of the 4 bolts ( that hold the pulley on) and against the big nut itself, and undo clockwise (its a LH thread bolt). Its held on by 60 ft lbs and not too hard to remove.
