The rule of thump is to take the stock length bolt (30mm) and add the size of the spacer, 15mm in your case. So I would want a 45mm bolt, the size you where told is correct. This should give you at least 6 full rotations of thread depth, anything less than that is a bit risky and I'd advise against it.
