Very odd set of challenges. When you start the car does it make any noise? Your belt tensioner could be bad allowing the belt to slip therefore causing the burning smell (rubber). Or the shop put the wrong size belt on it when they replaced the alt. This could also make it slip instead of running the water pump and power steering. A loose belt would explain all of that. One belt drives everything under the hood, with exception to the a/c compressor. When rubber gets hot it gets greasy and melts a bit, so if its loose, there you go...
