BMW covered the replacement of the CID (not sure exactly what that stands for.. computer internal display? - elsewhere it refers to the onboard monitor). Here is what the paperwork referred to: Fault A165A, Fault Internal, Perform Test Plan D6581-CID00000-90-003.

Is it possible to update the iDrive? I've enjoyed the newest iDrive system in a couple recent loaner cars, and while the version in my X5 isn't bad, if I can upgrade, I'd be interested. I'll do some searches on the forums.

Again - thanks for the info.

If they replaced a part, YOU should have a piece of paper with the replaced part number..usually xx-xx-x-xxx-xxx...imperative if you want the 2 year warranty on replacement parts.

Glad BMW stepped up.

Member apw above posted a thread on his replacement of the old CCC-based iDrive system with the newer CIC based system. A few people sell a 'kit' or parts you need to do it.
