Very simple, you can use a pick or something with a small tip on it to remove plugs in the roof rails. Underneath are some torx bolts.
Remove the bolts and the rack comes right off, seal using your preferred method (electrical tape in my case) and you're good to go.
As far as the look is concerned, I love it and get many compliments. People say the vehicle looks quite a bit lower than other X5s, and although the suspension is calibrated a bit low, the removal of the roof rack made the biggest difference in my opinion.
And to those saying it is now neutered, that is ridiculous. What is the point of having a roof rack when you can pull an X5 with a roof rack on a trailer behind you?
