Subsequent to my original post, I moved the USB stick in the 2012 from the glovebox to the arm rest (location of USB stick in 2008) but that made no difference.

I then tried to update my software and got the latest file from the BMW web but my X5 says the file is not compatible.

Frustrating as I wanted this new music for a trip of 3K that starts tomorrow morning.
