Hey m5james, I am just down the road in Bothell lol, small world.
I did it myself.
I was about to go down that same route because those versions are more abundant, however... I contacted ZF directly, and spoke with a very helpful gentleman named Steve in Chicago. He informed me that although there are many trannys under the 5HP24 umbrella, there are still variations from car to car, such as gear ratios, different torque converters, etc. & that a E38 version would probably work mechanically, but throw a bunch of codes.

I talked to a few shops, didn't feel very confident in any of them.
Clutch plates in mine looked great, I used the basic $200 rebuild kit, got it from Transtar in Lynnwood.
