Many other vehicles use similar systems, e.g., Ford Taurus, etc. It's a hassle, but one could check-out some vehicles on a non-BMW dealer's floor and, when you find a similar hook, take a walk to the parts department.

By they way, I believe if the rubber-type coating on the earlier model's light switch wears off, the only fix is a complete new light switch... not replacing the knob.

P.S. I've used these on my motorcycles for many years:

Bungee Loops :: Aerostich/RiderWearHouse Motorcycle Jackets, Suits, Clothing, & Gear

Not sure if they would be strong enough, but I suppose one could take a hacksaw and file to them to change the "loop" to a "hook."
