My last car was a GX470. I held onto it long enough to see what the GX460 would be like.
I took one look and said "OK.. X5 it is."
And I've never looked back.
When you factor in many things.. These were my personal factors..
- maintenance for 50K miles is included
- and it doesn't need to go in every 5K miles like the Lexus
- you can get more features on the X5 (HUD is my favorite)
- it's a nicer car (much less plastic)
- more comfortable
- NAV is nicer (you will not miss the touchscreen)
- WAY more fun to drive
I wrecked my GX once because it was such a bore to drive I actually fell asleep and hit the guardrail.
I suppose the new one is fine, but in my opinion, it is not built at a level commiserate with it's price. I too was worried about reliability, but I have not had any issues with my X5. The service "experience" is not nearly as good as Lexus, but it needs service much less often.
The Mark Levinson sound system is better - I had ML at home but swapped it out for Classe
