What indicated to me that the bushing were worn was when accelerated from a stop you could feel/here a clunk in the rear end, when you shifted you would also feel/here the clunk. My X5 in a manual, I think it would be more pronounced in a manual car. The more aggressive the acceleration the more louder the clunk. Looking at the bushing on the car they did not look worn. Once I lowered the subframe it was obvious, each of them were in two pieces.
