X5 in the snow - opinions wanted

We are the original owners of a 2003 X5 3.0L and dislike the snow so ours has rarely been. I have a friend who bought an '02 X5 3.0L within the past 2 years and he is in the snow a lot. He claims his X5 is terrible in the snow, worst of any of his 4wd/awd vehicles.

What is the "snowability" of the X5? Is it as bad as my friend claims or is it a function of tire selection? Suspension?

Much thanks!
