Bad marketing is probably what killed it. Same lesson HP learned in a very big and expensive way with their Touchpad. Great idea yes. iPad killer no! And at the same price point that was a very bad mistake to make, especially given the state of the OS and support available at launch. No wonder they got the hell out again, badly burned, but still going.
Figures from late 2011 (September I think) had the iPad outselling EVERY other tablet on the market combined by 4:1. That's a tough market to break into. Apple just did everything they needed to do, and got it right (mostly) first time. I'm not a fanboi and there are things that really bug me about the iPad (the virtual keyboard for one along with no external storage card support) but there simply isn't anything else out there that does enough of what I want.
That's not to say it's perfect by a long shot, but it's good enough, and in the IT industry that's usually enough. But boy do they ever need to get the current version of IOS fixed and soon. Perhaps a little mre effort on getting the customer rather than patent wars the focus might help!
