New here, hi guys.
I have a '03 X5 with 16:9 nav and DSP. This is one of those few times I wish I didn't have an upgrade option when I bought the car (but then again, I bought it used :-) I've been browsing the internet for solutions on replacing the nav with the new Dynavin D99. At first, I was looking for solutions to keep everything else stock as my primary interest was just getting the additional features in the Dynavin, not necessarily upgrading the audio sound. I've come to the acceptance of having to replace some of the audio components as well (and losing the OBC display on the speedometer display). So I'm looking at this type of install, please let me know if there's anything I might be missing or not considering....or if this will completely not work (hopefully not)
Basic premise, the 4 laws :-)
- minimize cost
- simple installation
- minimize hacking
- retaining as much features as possible (e.g. steering wheel controls...the latest Dynavin seems to offer OBC info, PDC visualization)
Thoughts on installation approach:
1. I was thinking of installing the Dynavin using the Fakra harness (seems to be required for cars with oem nav) to the connect to the factory harness. This is to keep as much of the features as possible because I'm guessing that the harness provides access to the steering wheel controls, OBC info, and PDC visualization.
[1.Question] By the way, does anyone know how the Dynavin is getting the OBC info and info for the PDC visualization? I'm hoping it's through the wiring harness that the stock nav board monitor was connected to.
2. In parallel to the harness connection, I would run the audio RCA output to the trunk. Seems really easy based on the instruction video
here (instructions for running dice, but you get the idea on pannel removes and wire routing). These would be FL, FR, RL, RR, and sub wires.
3. In the trunk, complete removal of the CD changer, the DSP amplifier, the nav controller/disc. Install an aftermarket 5 channel amplifier. Connection the audio RCA cables extended from the Dynavin to the aftermarket amplifier.
4. In order to drive the front and rear speakers, I will bypass the DSP output harness that the speakers are connected to and tap into each speaker wire directly. The issue I run into here is that there are 3 speakers for each side for the front.
[4.Question] I think I need to somehow separate the output wires from the FL and FR of the aftermarket amplifier? Maybe passive crossovers? Can each of the front output from the aftermarket amp be split into 3 lines? Or is there more to this that I'm not understanding? I really want to avoid having to take apart the speakers in the front doors...for cost reasons and simplicity sake.
5. What to do about driving the stock subwoofer.
[5.Question] I'm wondering if I could retain that and just run wires from the aftermarket amplifier's sub output and tap into the wires/harness connecting into the stock subwoofer? I'm hoping that this could work so that I can delay the purchase of an aftermarket subwoofer, again for cost savings reason.
So that's the general premise of the installation I'm thinking of. Does anyone know of any problem of connecting both the Dynavin harness and running the RCA lines? I figured that since the input connection for the DSP amp will be left disconnected after removing the DSP amp, signal to the speakers will be handled by the RCA and aftermarket amp routing. Will this allow me to keep the steering wheel controls, OBC data, and PDC visualization features on the Dynavin through the harness? I don't know if the harness somehow relies on the DSP amp being connected to keep the other features running?
