Drive really hard, ride the brakes...you'll get them done under the wire.

there's a sensor on the brakes - for what exactly I don't remember, but logic tells me since idrive shows pad wear and not rotor wear, I'll go with that one. Obviously it's not exact since it goes in maybe 1k increments.

As for replacing pads early, it is up to the dealer whether they'll do it for you when you're close, but most will. The rotors are more strict, see my experience:
