"Security Theatre", good line.
I just travelled to Europe with a work laptop (12" screen), an iPhone, and an iPad. They only wanted the laptop out (I asked). Same rule in Vancouver, Heathrow, and Gothenburg Sweden, with three different sets of security laws.
I recall the original rules about having to turn a laptop on to make sure it functioned, that has gone by the wayside. I once travelled to South America with a Bernina sewing machine as carry-on, about 1999. It had a computer inside it, was somewhat fragile, and couldn't be turned on after Vancouver since I didn't have the 240/120 transformer with me; it was waiting in South America. They eventually decided that nobody would be crazy enough to use a sewing machine as a cover for terrorist devices, and waved me through.
