MOTORDAVID... you're right about the lack of assist from BMW Assist Operators besides getting the tow truck. I lucked out in getting a tow truck guy with common sense who figured out how to manually disengage the lock. Not even the service (writer) guy at the dealer knew.
As mentioned, a bit of common sense from the tow truck guy got it going.
And as expected, I was told, it is not a common occurance.

I wouldn't worry about it happening again, sounds like a one-time deal (unless someone has been wrenching on the gear lever when it won't move). Most likely it was out of spec from new, and it stretched just far enough to strand you. If it happens again, something is moving and needs tracking down.
I worked at a family garage when younger, and drove the tow/recovery truck on weekends and summers. We had the BCAA franchise (AAA), and they put out a neat little book each year showing where all those disengage switches were on different vehicles, how far and fast you could flat tow each model, and where the door lock releases were located inside the doors, to help with slim jims. You got a good tow truck driver that knew his stuff.
