Since this is a X5 forum I would suggest the 2011 X5 35d but it would probably blow your budget.

I had been looking at VW Jetta SportWagen TDI. About $30,000 loaded, 42 MPG highway, about 66 cubes of total cargo volume, good build quality inside and out, and fun to drive for what it is. It's not the sexiest thing around but there are lots of guys out there who mod them. A Toureg TDI is good too but with much lower MPG and a much higher price tag. I wound up with an Audi A4 Avant.
