I've run into a similar issue that I don't think this setting solves. I jumped in my 12 35d at airport parking lot with key in my backpack. CA worked fine to open doors; threw backpack on passenger seat. Drove to a restaurant, got out with pack and locked car. Opened rear hatch to hide backpack (still with key in it) out of direct sight. Closed hatch, came back an hour later and no door would open.

I didn't think hatch was supposed to close with key in storage area.

iPhone app worked to unlock, but seems like a design shortcoming to me...
