The cooler is not prone to failure. I would not replace it as a scheduled preventative maintenance item. I would check around it for leaks.
Other vehicles that pass coolant into the transmission often have a transmission cooler loop installed in the radiator. This one is a separate heat exchanger, with oil on one side, and treated coolant on the other side. As long as the proper coolant is used, it should last much longer.
