I'm not sure if your model is the same but on the X3 there is a tab on the filter that fits into a notch in the housing. Here is DIY guide i put together with some photos:

I know that's overkill for a filter replacement, but i just wanted to document the process so anyone thinking about doing it could see how easy it is. Hope it helps someone.
