Ditto TX5...the MAX button performs the same operation as the old REST button as far as residual heat mode. When BMW changed the IHKA to include the MAX button...all that happened was a maximum cooling program was added to the IHKA....the REST feature wasn't removed...it was just incorporated into the MAX button. You still have to physically initiate the program...it doesn't start-up on it's own. But once started...the program will turn off after a specified time...or turn off when the ignition is turned past either position 1 or 2...and what ever IHKA setting you had prior...the system reverts back to that setting.

The MAX button will perform the REST(residual heat) program when:
  1. ambient temps are below 59 degrees F
  2. battery is properly charged
  3. engine is at normal operating temp


(this page below is from my old e38 or e39 owners manual...but the MAX/REST programming should work the same in the e53 since it is the same generational sibling as those two models)
