Hmmm this is strange. You're not using the ISP's propriatry software by chance?
All we need here is for DHCP to be active on the router, so that your desktop and/or laptop can just get a dynamic from the router.
I would have first suggested that you probably need to configure the router, but then that doesn't explain why plugging it in directly into the desktop works, but on the lappy.
What router model are you using?
