I would have first suggested that you probably need to configure the router, but then that doesn't explain why plugging it in directly into the desktop works, but on the lappy.

What router model are you using?
Not using ISP software. No software needed. Router: Linksys WRT54G. I don't believe the problem is with the router because I had the same problem with my laptop as well.

Everything is working normally right now, but yesterday I went through the same thing. When I came back, I found that internet was down again and had to reset the modem. But yea, the modem works with desktop fine.
