There is an "Ask Detailers Domain" at the top of this forum, post some questions here usually Phil is very helpful at anything you might ask.
Honestly just do a lot of reading, none of us here just knew how to properly detail cars, we researched, practiced, heck I even attended one of Detailers Domain seminar/customer appreciation days last year.
If you want to give your hand at machine polishing, you are going to achieve much better results by using a random orbital like the Griots or Porter Cable.
Your current technique is a good start, by clay barring the surface to get rid of contaminants (do this twice a year), but we also need to know what materials you use when you wash and dry, what wash mitts you use, what drying towels you use, what kinds of towels do you use for your buffing, etc.
However, if you skip straight to wax you forego a great paint correction process.
If you are seriously looking to permanently diminsh swirls and some scratches, you need a machine polisher, a versatile compound, polish, and then an LSP (last step product) like a good sealant. All done after you do your initial deep cleaning wash and clay bar.
Look at the thread in this forum about the new FG400 Fast Gloss from Menzerna, that is a very versatile product when used with the proper pads and machine, and technique, that can take very swirled paint and make it nearly ready to go directly to sealant afterwards.
The autopia site you posted is great, may I also recommend going on Adams Premium Car Care website too. Adam is a great guy I had the pleasure to meet at the Detailers Domain seminar this past year and his products work, as well as he gives GREAT INSTRUCTION for the average person who doesn't get technical but wants a great paint finish. He posts how-to videos for nearly all his products.
Spend some time on there, watch some videos, do some reading and research, and if you have more questions we can try to help
