The problem could have been caused by one of many thing like normal wear and tear, previous work on engine in that area,etc. I would make sure you order not only the gasket you noted, but any other gasket that has to be removed like the valve cover gasket,etc.

Additionally I would first remove the valve cover, which would give you a better prospective of what you are dealing with.
