you are on the right path - the battery needs to be replaced. did you use power washer for the engine bay? you may have indeed knocked something loose... once you replace the battery (have the local parts store charge the battery for few hours prior to install, even if the battery is "new"), run the dash tests while driving, to see if the voltage from alternator is fluctuating significantly...
