Mine just let go as well, what a mess, on the tilt tray to get it home. When I ordered a new one I was told that it was the second one for the week. My 2004 3.0D with 140K on it is always in the heat so probably helped the failure. I also replaced the power steering hoses, both belts and three tension pulleys so I don't get caught again.

If you have a few K on your X5 suggest you have a look at the condition of the rubber.
