Did you check out "Diagnostic Software" subforum on bimmerforums.com? They're pretty active overthere with some knowledgable guys.
I had my stuffs running in a Dell D600 laptop bought fot $100
from craigslist. I want the D600 since it has the serial connection that is better than using adapter from USB to Serial, in order to connect the INPA/EDIABAS cable.I used it exclusively for my bimmers.
Check eBay and local craigslist for cheap used laptop.
