Does it not make sense that the air coming from the tubing (shit, almost ram air) is colder than the engine in the engine bay? I also do not think the stock box is that terribly restrictive...
Are there any dyno tests to show these results? Sure it sounds cooler to hear the air sucking into the intake... I have never heard of self adjusting tuning.
Although "you learn something new about you x5 everyday" is an understatement to say the least!
