I got a copy of the bentley service manual and just jumped in. Pulled the dash and the console, replaced the motor and put her all back together - no squeaks or rattles. It took about 12 hours. Not too bad if you take your time and keep calm. This was by far the most ambitious DIY I've tackled, so am feeling pretty, pretty, pretty good about things (knock on wood).

If you take this on, resist the temptation to ignore the step about removing the console -it's obvioulsy more work, but it sure makes the whole process easier.
