You wrote that you have an 01 4.4...which would be the M62TU engine...are you sure it takes 8.5 quarts? I only ask because I've owned the M62 & M62TU (e38/e39) and they only took 8 quarts. My 06 4.4 (with the N62 engine) does take 8.5 quarts. Double check your owners manual...it should be listed in the Fluid Capacity section. Those that have the e53 w/M62TU engine...please chime in to correct me if I'm wrong.

I would also recommend shopping for any of the German Brand name oil filters:
  • BMW
  • Bosch
  • Meyle
  • Mann
  • Hengst
You can usually find the brands above online at forum sponsoring vendors, eBay, amazon.com, etc. You can usually buy multiple filters at a discount, and that way you'll be prepared for the next time you need to do an oil change.

In fact, if you look up the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the oil filter kit and type "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" into a google search box...you'll find pages full of vendors that sell the correct oil filter kit (includes the O-rings and washers).
